How to Keep Your German Shepherd from Shedding This Summer
The German Shepherd Dog (GSD) tops the charts as one of the most favored breeds in the U.S., according to American Kennel Club. With this popularity, there’s a challenge we face: shedding! Owning two spirited GSDs—Sheeba and Zoey. I’ve truly had to figure out how to tackle their shedding when summer hits.
The German Shepherd Difference

Why focus on this for GSDs? It’s that special double coat of theirs. They shed more than many other breeds out there. Sheeba (my stoic black-and-tan speedster) loses fur like it’s going out of style during summer. Then there’s Zoey, my long-coated mischievous girl, leaving her own fuzz everywhere, marking her territory in fluff.
Both my dogs compete with each other for attention—and airflow. on those scorching hot days. With their dense coats meant for cooler weather, they drop a lot of undercoat fur when summer hits, which naturally ends up all over our place!

5 Practical Tips for Preventing Summer Shedding in German Shepherds

In short? Regular grooming paired with proper care can really make all the difference.
- Brush Regularly: Brushing often—a couple times each week. is crucial to keep loose hair from taking over my life. For Sheeba, I start with a slicker brush and then hit any stubborn hairs with a de-shedding tool.
- Hydration Matters: Keep your GSD well-watered because hydration keeps their skin healthy, directly impacting how much they shed.
- Healthy Diet: A balanced diet packed with Omega-3 fatty acids really boosts skin and coat health. Zoey’s coat got this amazing shine after we switched up her meals! She’s practically glowing now, like a furry lightbulb!
- Avoid Stress: Stress amps up shedding in dogs big time. My two girls handle stress better with calming tricks like gentle play or heading out on walks side by side.
- Cleansing Routines: Keeping a cleaning routine is vital! I’ve got lint rollers stashed everywhere—handy for car rides post-outing or just when we’re chilling on the couch!
This setup did wonders after some trial and error with Sheeba and Zoey (and let me tell you, dust bunnies were starting to reign supreme!). Now that I’ve nailed down what suits both girls’ coats, sticking to it is key.

The Importance of Nutrition
A nutritious diet specially crafted for German Shepherds keeps excessive shedding at bay during those unforgiving summertime heat spells.
For example, did you know that feeding them high-quality kibble enriched with fish oil not only helps improve the texture of their fur but also reduces instances of flaky skin? After switching up Zoey's diet based on vet advice—a mix of chicken and salmon flavor. I was amazed at how much healthier her coat became! Now she struts around proudly instead of leaving trails behind her.
Sneaky tip from me: If you notice your dog seems uninterested lately or scratch more often than usual while still having an appetite? It might be time to chat with your vet about adjusting their caloric intake or what food types suit them best.

Mental Stimulation: An Overlooked Factor
Mental stimulation plays a big part too! Boredom can lead dogs into feeling stressed or anxious—contributing further towards increased levels of shedding as they fidget around restlessly trying to relieve stressors.
Here’s how I keep both girls entertained:
- Toy puzzles filled with treats—they love working together!
- Pit stops during walks where we practice commands; one day I realized this also kept them cool because they'd stop because they weren't focused solely on running wild!
here’s another fun fact; when it came down between having sheer willpower against motivation—Sheeba was always faster despite being stoic!">
brought tremendous joy while reducing unnecessary anxiety—and allowed us some bonding moments too!
some great toy brands include Kong & West Paw if you're looking for sturdy options!
| Brand | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| Kong | Durable & versatile | Can get lost easily if thrown too far away |
| West Paw | Great texture options available | Might wear down overtime depending on usage frequency ; td > |
