The short answer is: knowing your dog’s history shapes how you handle training. For example, when we started showing Sheeba the shallow end, she seemed startled—didn’t know what to make of it!

The Step-by-Step Protocol for Teaching Water Confidence
This isn’t a one-size-fits-all. Each dog will respond differently depending on their personality traits, age (like working with an eight-week-old puppy or a three-year-old), and past experiences with water.
- Create Positive Associations: Begin by letting them explore near the edges without any pressure to go in.
- Praise & Treats: Give treats each time they approach or touch water (Zoey loves this bit!).
- Splash Play: Jump in yourself! Make it look like a blast—toss some toys, splash around!
- Shallow Waters First: Ease them into deeper spots at their own pace. We led Sheeba into two feet of clear water. She saw her reflection, and that calmed her nerves!
- Add Swim Gear: Think about life jackets crafted for big breeds like German Shepherds for those early swimming lessons.
This approach really helped with both Sheeba and Zoey. But yep, we hit some snags too!

- Barking at Water Sounds?: Some pups get jittery near splashes or fountains; try starting them off in quieter spots then gradually move to busier ones.
- Tugging Away?: If they're pulling back rather than plunging forward—stay cool! Sit by the edge before coaxing them closer again.
- Paddle Avoidance?: Sometimes they dodge placing paws in because it's new territory; toss toys just out of reach so they'll naturally paddle towards them!
I recall when Zoey was scared stiff of deeper waters—even though she watched other dogs having a ball nearby! After several rounds of me splashing and tossing her favorite toy in the shallows, she finally took the plunge! It was slow going but totally worth every splash.
