Every June, I’m on high alert with Sheeba and Zoey. As soon as summer rolls in, I’ve got that big red flag waving — hello, allergy season! A buddy once told me his Golden Retriever struggled every spring. I shrugged it off back then but now with both my German Shepherds showing symptoms, it’s real. Are your GSDs at risk too? The German Shepherd Difference in Allergy Risks
German Shepherds aren’t just any dog. They’re brainy and super active, used in roles from cops to therapy. That smarts comes with its own set of potential headaches when facing allergies.
Says the American Kennel Club, these pups often deal with skin issues due to double coats — making allergies a different ballgame compared to other breeds.
Here’s the scoop: German Shepherds sport a thick undercoat—it’s great for keeping them warm but not so great when it traps pollen and dust right against their skin during heavy spring shedding.
Sheeba’s Tip: Brushing regularly cuts down on dander and yanks out loose fur! Try for at least twice weekly in shedding season.
That insulating coat can turn into an allergen trap, messing with their sensitive skin.

Common Summer Allergies in German Shepherds
The short version? Yep, your GSD could run into allergy issues come summertime. Here are some typical troublemakers you want to watch for:
- Pollen: Grass pollen is super common during spring and early summer.
- Mold: In damp spots outside, mold loves to grow—can really irritate those with sensitivities.
- Tiny pests live indoors; vacuuming often helps keep them at bay!
- Warm weather wakes up fleas; just one bite might cause a bad reaction!
After confusing talks with our vet on possible causes (with some misdiagnoses), we discovered she had a flea allergy! Looks like better prevention was needed.
A study by PetMD showed many big breed dogs face similar allergy triggers compared to smaller dogs, but symptoms can hit harder due to their larger size.
